Menstrual cup
Menstrual cup (safest period mode)
Plenty of people with periods don’t want to deal with the possibility of blood touching them. I get it. And chances are, if you use a menstrual cup, you’re going to get up close and personal with your own blood at some point. On the other hand, I’m sure you’ve had the same thing happen when you’ve dripped between pad/tampon changes, when you’ve over-saturated a pad or tampon at night, or when your period started unexpectedly.
Menstrual cups are the rubber or silicone cups that are inserted into the vagina to collect the menstruation flow. These cups are both flexible as well as reusable which make them an environmentally friendly product.
The collection of the period flow can be done by various menstrual products available in the market such as sanitary napkins, tampons, or menstrual cups.
When you use a menstrual cup for the first time, it may feel uncomfortable. But “greasing” your cup can help make the process smooth. Before you put in your cup, lubricate the rim with water or a water-based lube (lubricant). A wet menstrual cup is much easier to insert.
Most menstrual cup brands sell a smaller and a larger size. Menstrual cups are sold colorless and translucent, but several brands also offer colored cups, such as pink or purple.
Can virgins use menstrual cups?
Yes, if you are a virgin, you can use a menstrual cup. In fact, you can start using a menstrual cup as as you get your period.
Although there is no age limit; it does however require that you are comfortable with your body and period.
How to insert menstrual cup
follow these steps to use a cup:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Apply water or a water-based lube to the rim of the cup.
- Tightly fold the menstrual cup in half, holding it in one hand with the rim facing up.
- Insert the cup, rim up, into your vagina like you would a tampon without an applicator. It should sit a few inches below your cervix.
- Once the cup is in your vagina, rotate it. It will spring open to create an airtight seal that stops leaks.
You shouldn’t feel your menstrual cup if you’ve inserted the cup correctly. You should also be able to move, jump, sit, stand, and do other everyday activities without your cup falling out. If you’re having trouble putting in your cup, speak with your doctor.
When it to be empty
The DivaCup must be emptied, washed and reinserted at least 2 times a day (twice in a 24 hour period) and can be worn overnight without concern of leaking. Most women need only to empty it in the morning and again in the evening.
By monitoring the fullness of the cup over a couple of cycles, you will quickly learn how often to empty it according to your specific needs. Most women find that the cup is not even half full after 12 hours. For those with heavier flows, the cup is simply emptied more often.
If you have a fairly regular cycle, you may insert The DivaCup right before your period to avoid spotting.
Advantages
Some of the advantages are:
- After a regular use of menstrual cups, the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis can decrease sufficiently.
- Regular use of menstrual cups helps in retaining the micro-organisms which provide protection against harmful micro-organisms (disease-causing microorganisms), thereby leading to a decrease in the sexually transmitted disease
- The leakage happens rarely
- The menstrual cups are known for their ease of insertion and comfort
- The menstrual cup can be used during a sexual intercourse with no or little discomfort experienced by the woman or her partner
- The dryness or irritation experienced with other products are not experienced with the use of a menstrual cup
- The menstrual cup can be used for a longer duration and hence, the frequency of changing the menstrual protection can be reduced
- The collection of the menstrual blood can be assessed or monitored for heavy or light periods
- The major advantage of using a menstrual cup is its environmental friendliness.
- There is no need for disposing of the menstrual cup after each use i.e. the cups are reusable This happens to be one of the major reasons for the use of menstrual cups over other products
